goodsoil 300x240 Good Soil And How Its MadeHow Do You Make Good Soil From Bad?

If you are planting, you need to amend the soil to properly grow plants. You want the perfect mixture of sand, silt and clay. Preferably 40 percent sand, 40 percent silt, and 20 percent clay. There are several tests experienced gardeners use to determine whether this dirt is of good soil composition. First you can compress it in your hand and if it doesn’t hold its shape and crumbles without much force, the sand ratio is probably a too high to be good soil. Poking the compressed ball with your finger and not having it fall apart easily, your soil probably has too much clay therefore it isn’t good soil.

If you’ve tested and you’re still not sure about the composition of your dirt and whether it’s good soil, you should separate each ingredient by using this uncomplicated method. Place a cup or two of dirt into a jar filled with water then shake the water until all of the soil is suspended, now let it settle until you see it separate into 3 totally separate layers. The top layer will be clay, the next will be silt, and finally the bottom will be sand. You’ll be able to judge the presence of each component within your soil, and make good soil.

Analyze To Determine Good Soil Or Bad.

Once you’ve analyzed the content of your soil, then decide that it is lacking in a certain type then you should do something to fix it. If dealing with too much silt or sand, the best solution is to add peat moss or compost to make good soil. Too much clay, then add a mixture of peat moss and sand. To make good soil. Peat moss, when moistened, helps nutrients to infiltrate the mixture better. If you can’t seem to manage to attain a proper good soil mixture, just head down to your local garden center where you should be able to find some products and help.

Water content of good soil is another important thing when prepping for your soil. If you are at the bottom of a hill, most likely the soil is going to absorb far too much water and drown the plants. If this is the situation, you should elevate your plantings a few inches (4 or 5) above the rest of the grade. Doing this will allow for more drainage and avoid saturation maintaining good soil.

Good Soil Is Nutrient Rich Soil

You should add nutrients to your soil because this is vital for your plants. The majority of urban soils today have few nutrients in them so adding a good fertilizer is essential to creating good soil for plants to grow in.

If you are planting seeds, you should fertilize, then wait a couple of weeks before seeding. Once your seeds are planted, you still want to pay attention to the soil. The first several weeks, seeds and seedlings are using up all the nutrients near them. If the food runs out how are they supposed to grow? One week after planting, you should add the same amount of fertilizer that you added during the preparation of good soil. After this you should continue to use fertilizer, but not as often. If you add a small amount every couple of weeks, it will be plenty to keep your garden growing.

Simple Steps To Good Soil

The complete and entire process of good soil creation and care can be made into just a few steps… First, ensure the makeup of the soil is satisfactory. Then you must make sure that you have proper drainage. Now add fertilizer both before and after planting and then add fertilizer regularly after that to maintain good soil. If you follow these few simple steps, you’ll have an abundance of healthy plants in short order.
